Python is a free, open-source, highly versatile programming language that runs on any operating system. It is heavily used in multiple disciplines and industries, and is popular for both research and general purpose computing. Python is a beginner-friendly programing language to learn and use.
This workshop will focus on research applications. You will learn how to import, synthesize, and chart data in a manner that is easily repeatable and shareable with your research community.
*Prerequisites:
We have a lot to cover in the workshop so we will jump right into working with Python there. Registrants/Learners need to have the Python computing environment installed and running on their laptops before arriving for the workshop. We will not have time at the workshop to help with or troubleshoot installation on your computer, and we want to make sure everyone has a positive and fruitful workshop day.
To assist with this, workshop instructor David Palmquist and Digital Literacy Librarian Colleen Robledo Greene have scheduled a series of mandatory drop-in office hours to get your coding environment set up prior to the workshop. These will be held virtually via Zoom, with a hybrid option for those who want to visit the Pollak Library for in-person help. Each registrant must attend one of the office hours times listed on this page.
If you want to install Python on your own:
- Follow these instructions.
- You still need to attend one Office Hours for us to test out your installation… which should only take 5-10 minutes!
If you want us to walk you through the installation:
- Take the time beforehand to download the “Anaconda Distribution” onto your laptop. It’s a very large file [0.5 GB], so it saves time to do this before you come. No other action is needed except to get the downloaded package. You don’t need to double-click it, don’t need to extract it, etc.
- Then just drop-in one Office Hours! (Please come towards the beginning of the hour.)

On the Workshop Day
Registrants/Learners need to bring their laptop + its charging cord, since we will work on these all day.
